Queensland is the second largest
state of Australia occuping 22.5 per cent of the continent, with 7400 km of
coastline Qld occupies an area of 1727 000 square kilometres. At it's widest
point it is 1450 km from east to west with a distance of 2100 km from north
to south. It is approximately seven times the area of the United Kingdom, five
times the area of Japan and twice that of Texas, USA.
Local Government
Area (LGA) Australia operates three levels of government: Commonwealth,
State and Local. The Queensland maps shown in The Long Paddock e.g. rainfall
and drought declaration have the Local Government Area boundaries overlayed
in black. Most of the maps show the LGA's as they were in 1986. LGA's boundaries
may change slightly from time to time.
These maps should be accurate
as at February 1996. It is impractical to show the names of each LGA on the
map products at the resolution supplied, but this section may help you to find
a particular location of interest. The Australian Bureau of Statistics breaks
LGA's into Statistical Divisions for example "Moreton and Brisbane" there are
10 such statistical divisions. These are shown in the top frame.
Place names The place names
shown on these maps (detailed views) were taken from the Bureau of Meteorology's
real-time rainfall reporting network as at December 1995. The place names are
a selection of Queensland places, and are not meant as an extensive or complete
list.
